to mean that he <grew up/matured/came of age> with the beliefs and rituals of the Church as a part of his life?

I suppose it would be understood but I wouldn't recommend it. "raised in the Church" is a pretty standard phrase and is well understood, changing it would only have the effect of distracting your reader or listener.
