Raise himself up on it?

Hello everybody.

he had moved close to thechest of drawers without effort, probably as a result of the practice he had already had in bed, and now he was trying

to raise himself up on it.

This a part of Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Would you please tell me what the bold part means?

Does it mean climbing up on the chest of drawers or standing by the help of chest of drawers?

I have another question, too.

It reads he turned his head, irritated and in pain, and rubbed it on the carpet.

What does "irritated and in pain" refer to? The head or the man?

Thanks so much ??
