Raining

Hi, could you please help with these sentences?

I did not go out because it rained.
I did not go out because it was raining.

Can we use both of them interchangeably? Is there any difference in meaning?

Both are correct. But the Continuous is better, because it suggests more clearly that it was actully raining at the time you considered going out.
