Rainforest

Hi,

Should the article 'the' always be used before 'rainforest'? For example, much of the destruction of 'the' rainforest is illegal.

I meant is the article optional in my sentence and similar ones. For example, we must protect (the) rainforest. I didn't mean when used attributively.
