Rain a little/ a lot

Hey guys! What do say to mean the small or huge amount of the rainfall? Is it 'rain a little' & 'rain a lot'? I think for the huge amount, it could be 'raining heavily' also, albeit not sure & for the first case, I just got nothing except 'a little'.Please help!
