railway cisterns

As far as I know cistern is a tank for storing water and is related with sanitary system.Can anybody help me whether I am wrong or not?

Oil transport by railway tankers is more expensive and it is used mostly for shorter distances where there is no pipeline.

Cistern - is normally used to refer to water storage, most commonly on the w.c. but also in the roof of a house or on the back of the old railway steam engines.

How do you call a tanker which goes across the river or sea. I see there is a river tanker. What about the sea?
