Radio shack - original meaning?

Hi,

This question is not about (the name of ) the famous store chain.
Just curious what "radio shack" had meant to everybody before the chain was established.
Is it a slang term?

I can't be certain, Mus-te, but I feel confident that "radio shack" is a term that my have originated on the battlefield soon after the wireless was invented. A shack is something that is roughly constructed and could be portable. The radio shack would be the precursor of today's communications command center.

  • I'll be interested if others offer an opinion.
