racked with nightmare

Hello Sir,

1.He shut his eyes tight and encased himself in his blanket once again and unkown to himself fell asleep and in sleep was racked with nightmare.

Unknow to himself means here that I was in deep slumber?

What is meanig of "racked with nightmare"

unkown to himself fell asleep : means that he fell asleep without realizing it

racked with nightmare: it means that he was tormented by nightmares (are you sure there's not an "s"?)
