Q:What does this "[ADJ] usu v-link ADJ to n" infomation mean in Collins Dictionary?

Can anybody tell me what does the "v-link" mean in Collins Dictionary? Thanks very much!

pro|por|tion|al /pr?p'??r??n?l/

[ADJ] usu v-link ADJ to n

If one amount is proportional to another, the two amounts increase and decrease at the same rate so there is always the same relationship between them. (FORMAL)

Xuehua: Welcome to the forum! If you have Collins Dictionary, this will be explained in the first few pages. There should be a section titled "how to use the dictionary" or something like that.

  • This section will describe all the abbreviations in the entries, and the symbols for pronunciation, etc.
  • I am guessing that the abbreviations you are seeing describe how the word is used in a sentence.

Dear Alphecca Stars:
My Collins Dictionary is the electronic edition. I have searched the whole web without an answer.
Thanks so much for your detailed explanation!  And I'm ready to buy the dictionary these days.

Even the electronic edition should have an explanation! Shame on them if you are paying for this and not getting the basic instructions on usage.

I didn't pay for it.
I use the Collins Dictionary with a free software named Lingoes Translator 2 , which has many dicitonaryis installed on it. Thess dictionaries are alse declared to be free access.
I just type the word then push the "search" button and haven't found any infomation about its usage.

The grammar usage would be very helpful. It looks like a good dictionary. It might be worth buying a copy. I use the on-line dictionary at dictionary.com. It has parts of speech, but not usage.
