"write me" and "write to me"-- difference?

I always get confused when the 'to' should be used in such cases:
Why don't you write me?

vs
Why don't you write to me?

Thanks

No difference in meaning. Some verbs permit the omission of prepositions under various conditions. If there were a direct object, the prepositional form would have to be placed after it: Please write me.
