"Were" is disappearing?

"If I was Hitler I'd send my bombers across in the middle of the disarmament conferencecolorc>"

The writer was obvioulsy not "Hitler", and he was drawing a hypothetical parallel --- hence, shouldn't it have been "If I were Hitler"?

I think both "was" and "were" are Ok in the modern English.

Also I'd say "... I'd have sent..."

P.S.: You know, the conference didn't trouble Hitler very much...
