"weighing in on"

Guys, any idea what "weighing in on" means? I've tried getting the meaning from context but haven't been very successful...

Here's an example that seems like the meaning is "to be interested in" or "to be concerned with":

The press around the world is weighing in on Hurricane Katrina

But other examples don't really seem to carry the same meaning to me:

It's the Screen Actors Guild, which is weighing in on what it considers the best in television and film

The Center for Reproductive Rights is weighing in on the first constitutional challenge to ease Colombia’s ban on abortion

I would greatly appreciate any help on this one.

Thanks a million

I would understand this as 'concentrating all their efforts on' or 'focussing on'.

No, it really means to express your opinion, as Nef said. You can think, focus, ponder, internalize - whatever - as you wish, but only when you express your opinion on an issue do you weigh in on it.

I agree with Grammar Geek and Nef. When you "weigh in on" an issue, you express your opinion so that it will be added to the cumulative "weight" of opinion on the side you favor. It means making your opinion known publicly.
