is it possible to say "very basic" when talking/writing about the knowledge of the language? I usually use excellent, good and basic ... basic for a language i am not that confident at and don't have lots of practice but manage to have a chat without great problems. What about the language that you once studied for a short period, can understand a bit but not enough to be able to function well in the environment where the language is spoken. Is there any other expression i could use instead?
Mentioning the language you have such a humble knowledge of might be senseless but not when having ambition to improve it and when it seems to be beneficial for the future career i guess.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi, Sure, 'very basic' is a common expression. How about saying 'I speak a few words of ... Chinese '?
