Someone had a little fit, someone else said: "they call them thinking spells". So it's a kind of a fit, but what exactly means "thinking spell"?

period (spell) when you do NOT think

Do you mean the kind of mild epilepsy resulting in "absences", where the sufferer momentarily appears to zone out? If it's this, I've never heard it called a thinking spell before.

A spell can mean a short period of time.

Yes, it's called "petit mal". But I wonder what exactly means "thinking spell". It was put by the author in inverted commas.

Could anybody translate it into Spanish?

Milva - "thinking spell" means precisely a short period of time (spell) where you appear to be thinking - i.e. petit mal. It is not a common expression to describe this condition or experience.

What I don't understand about that is: when someone has a 'petit mal' he/she is actually unconscious for a moment, so why "thinking spell"? Doesn't it sound illogical?

I would imagine the author is describing what it looks like to an observer, not what's going on inside.
