"the" usage

I am familiar about the golden rules of the usage of the article "the." But I still do not get it right 100% of the time. How do I master the subtle rules that govern its usage?

Hi Tyro, Here are some rules that I adapted from this page: An, The" definite and indefinite articles in English - Beginning Guide to indefinite articles. There is also a great fill-in-the-gaps exercise on the page, which shoud help you get to grips with the rules. the = definite article (a specific object that both the person speaking and the listener know) The car over there is fast.

It's true, the tests are interesting. They're a good way to gauge your level of skill, and you can try them as many times as you like, till you get all the answers right.

Although it is common usage in England to refer to the university or the hospital without the article, Americans almost aways use the article. High school and grammar school is used without the article.
The rule about places has exceptions. "He entered the market square". "The woman is at the center of the room", "The astronauts are going to the Moon."
