"The" doubt,please clarify it.

Dear friends
Recently i saw a English Accent video clip.One man said the following words:
"Now lets see how the r sound is used in middle of words".

My doubt is:why did not he use "middle of the words".I mean,why did"nt he use "the".

Please clarify my doubt.I have this doubt of where to use "the" and where not to for a very long time.
