"their tying...." or "them tying....."?????

Hi,

I came up with the sentence in a book, "As you know, Rose and Mark are chalk and cheese and the idea of them tying the knot seems impossible."

Is it correct to say, "..... and the idea of their tying the knot seems impossible." ? This sounds more right to me. I don't understand why.

I have read the former subject about "him being" vs. "his being" ......but still not sure about this one. : (

Thank you.
