"The tone of the meeting was very pessimistic." The tone?

The tone of the meeting was very pessimistic.

What was referred to by the word 'tone'? Does it mean that the things talked about in the meeting were not desirable?

Thank you

The people at the meeting talked pessimistically. They said things that showed that they were not in a very hopeful mood (about whatever they were talking about).
