"That" vs "Where"

My teacher asked me to explain why did I use "that" in the first sentence and "where" in the second.
1. I love the small town that we visited last week.
2. I love the small town where I lived during my childhood.(is "that" also possible here?)
(I guess: the first sentence is a that clause, "visited"is not a verb, and the second one is a descriptive sentence )
Will my teacher be happy with such a simple explanation like this?
I need advice! Would anyone help?
Great thanks in advance!
