"Table of contents" and "Index"

1. Table of contents
2. Index
Can u tell me what is the difference ?

Top answer

The Table of Contents comes at the beginning of a book and lists things in the order in which they appear in the book. The Index appears at the back of the book, and lists things alphabetically, so you can look up a subject and find out what page it appears on.

The table of contents is also much more general with usually just chapter headings.

The index is far more detailed, so that you can find where certain people are mentioned, for example.
