"Stand free" about stars

Please help me to understand this sentence from a book:
Overhead the tent framework was visible only as a faint pattern of occluded stars; it seemed they stood free, in a chill night wind.
I don't get what it means that the stars stood free -- did it seem they could fall or what? Thank you in advance!

They are saying the tent itself seemed insubstantial - the 'they' that stood free would be the people. They feel as though they are out in the open air, not in a tent.
