"skinny"

In a casual conversation with my Australian friend, I said, "Thanks for the skinny." to show my appreciation for the information she provided me. Her response was "What do you mean by "skinny"?" surprisingly. I am wondering how common this word is among English speakers. I am Japanese for your information. Thank you very much in advance.

For me, "the skinny" - the tip, the information, the (inside) information, the advice. S. this would be understood perfectly well.

That's relieving to hear. I guess I don't need to hesitate to use that word, then. Thanks!!!

I've never heard it used in that sense.

Hello Guest, CJ and NtB

Curious that 'skinny' should mean inside information, when you
think about it. ('Skinside inside...')

Where does it come from? Rhyming slang (skinny dip/tip)?

I don't believe anyone knows where it comes from.
Here's one opinion.
