He always shrinks from facing up to his family problems.

or

He always escapes from his family problems

or

He always turns his back upon his family problems

(all of the above mean 'he hides himself from the probelms")

Depending on what you want to say, you can use "shirk" as well. Definition: to evade the performance of an obligation I can see people drinking themselves to death as a way of escaping from their problems. I can also see somebody refusing to help, like "turning your back on your family".
