"poach my fool head in vermouth"

Hi,

I have seen a movie and there is a scene between a chef in a restaurant and his lover, who has just come on a visit. When he wants the lover to scoot, the chef says: "It's about to get busy [the restaurant?] and I need some time to poach my fool head in vermouth."

Could you please tell me what this means? Is it an allusion to cooking? Is it a figurative statement? Thanks.
