Please have a look at this sentense,

"I was supposed to email you earlier on and am so sorry for the late reply..........,"

Is the "on" necessary here or optional?

Me, neither. Yet, I see at least a little family resemblance between this "on" and the "on" of the expressions keep on and go on, with the idea of continuation.

It is not the odious locution some people think. Slightly informal, it is a perfectly idiomatic phrase in both AmE and BrE.
