Weird you asked that. I'm correcting uni papers and I automatically corrected using "to become" as wrong. Then wanting to be 100% sure I thought I'd check... so back to square one!!

I might illustrate the difference between "on his way to do" and "on his way to doing" this way:

1. (in order) to + verb
He is on his way to meet the President.
-->
He is currently traveling. After his plane lands, he is going to drive to the White House and meet with the President.

2. to + verb-ing
He is on his way to meeti

Hi, could u explain it more detailedly? I do not very understand this and I still do not know why it is " becoming " instead of "become" .
I thought it was "become" because after "to" is a root word, so it is " become"
I do not doubt your answer , but I just hope u can give me a more detailed explanation as this is important to me.

No. 2 implies being in the process of doing something now, but have not completed it yet, so a noun is needed after 'to', which would indicate the action you are doing. 'becoming' in the second statement is a gerund (i.e. a noun).
No. 1 implies that you haven't started anything of the action referred to after 'to', therefore a verb is needed after 'to' as here it is just a normal 'to+verb' phr

No. 2 is really 'on his way to the state of meeting the President' (meeting being a gerund here)
