"off" or "off of"?

I noticed people very often say e.g.

"Take these things off the table".

Is this correct or doesn't it actually have to be

"Take your things off of the table?"

I've been wondering about this a certain time already and it still keeps me thinking as I would say that "off of" should be used, or am I wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Pemm. I think it would be fair to say that 'off of' sounds wrong to most native speakers, but is is certainly used by many. Maybe someone else can offer a more definitive view.

It should be 'off of', however laziness seems to have affected this and you will more commonly hear it without the 'of'. Personally, I always say 'off of'...
