"numbers" or "number"?



The Native Americans understandably resented the numbers of settlers who swarmed onto their lands.
Is "numbers" a typo? Which is correct, "number" or "numbers"? What's the difference?

Hi,

I think your question is dealing with the use of phrases "numbers of something" and "a number of something." To that I would suggest you put in the word "different" or "various," although the sentences with those adjectivess would not necessary make perfect sense, in front of the word "numbers" and see if that makes some sense. (I am not saying I am right though.)
