"Mine's" and "If I were"

I was informed by a friend that Mine's isn't a word...can someone clarify that for me?

Also, I often hear "If I were..." but I thought since I is first person, don't you have to you "If I was.." in stead?

Here 'Mine's' is a contracted form of 'Mine is'.

I were
"If I were a bird, I would fly to you country."
This 'I were a bird' indicates that 'my being a bird' is unreal.
