"...main arteries..." MAIN ?

This is the entry for the word 'artery' in my dictionary. I was wondering whether it is necessary to include the adjective 'mainly' in the example when 'artery' itself already has the meaning of importantance.

artery (ROAD/RAILWAY) noun [ C ]
an important road or railway line
the main arteries leading into London

Thank you for your help.

Best wishes,

Arteries appear to be subclassified, at least in anatomical references: The heart pumps blood out through one main artery called the dorsal aorta. The main artery then divides and branches out into many smaller arteries so that each region of your body has its own system of arteries supplying it with fresh, oxygen-rich blood. These are of course in contradistinction to ' veins ', which bring the blood back to the heart.

Aorta: the main trunk of the systemic arteries. But seems that it has nothing to do with your question.

While bearing the meaning of "a major route of transportation into which local routes flow"[1], the difference between artery and main artery lies in the importance or status or degree or level of the route.

It's like ecstasy.
