"It was transformed from a trading port into a centre for light industry...

Hi all,

It was transformed from a trading port into a centre for light industry and, in its lastest incarnation, a global hub for the services industry. (BBC)

I have got two questions about this sentence. First, what does it mean 'incarnation' here? Second, would it make a difference if it read 'It had transformed from a trading port into..."?

Thank you.

Best wishes,

PBF

Peaceblinkfriend Hi all, It was transformed from a trading port into a centre for light industry and, in its lastest incarnation , a global hub for the services industry. 'Incarnation' figuratively means 'creation'. It originally meant 'birth', as in human beings.

The trading center didn't transform itself, so the passive [was transformed] is more appropriate.
