what preposition do we use for the word field "in" or "on"?
e.g: there are lots of animals in the field or on the field?

Which one would be correct:

1. The information is on our files.
Not idiomatic. You could say 'We have the information on file'. 'On file' is a standard, fixed expression that means 'in our files'.

2. The information is in our files. Sounds fine.
