"...has been cooking for a bank for five years" typo?

Caroline Jonstone is 26 and has been cooking for a bank for five years.

This is a sentence form Collins Cobuild's English Grammar and it doesn't make any sense to me at all. Do you think there is a typo?

Thanks.

Best wishes,

Hello PBF:), Do you mean typo because of the word "bank"? because bank has several meanings, doesn't it?

Caroline Jonstone is 26 and has been cooking for a bank for five years.

The bank is probably a large financial institution with a directors' dining room, where important clients are entertained.

cook - (informal usage/slang) means to perform, work, or do in just the right way and with energy and enthusiasm.

I hope that one helped.

I seriously doubt that a grammar book would use this informal meaning of "cook" in an example. It would be used conversationally -- "Wow, we're really cooking now!" to mean "We're doing great! We're making progress!" In the original example, I think it's much more likely that the person has a job cooking for the bank's employee dining room.

Hi Khoff,

I respect your opinion, though still to my conviction, Caroline Jonstone is 26 and has been cooking (performing, working, or doing in just the right way and with energy and enthusiasm) for a bank for five years makes sense. Well, we weren't able to read the whole passage the author had written so I cannot say which among our suppositions is correct, am I ri
