Grammar

"had used to" etc.

I keep coming across these constructions:

had used to

had been used to

E.G.:

I had used to think that the world was large.

I had been used to thinking that she liked me.

I get mixed responses as to how folks feel about them, but little guidance on whether they are standard and correct usage.

Those expressions are tough. Hmmm. Where I live (southern US), we wouldn't put the "had" in example one--I'd say "I used to think that...." But, to be on the safe side, you might want to avoid example one in writing. "I once thought that..." is direct and concise. Example two is fine, and I can't think of another way to write it (well, maybe "I had been accustomed to thinking...").

I didn't forget those, it's another thing:

had used to

had been used to

Past perfect.
