0 Hi,02br 02br 00The differences between the two have been extensively discussed before in this 05100. 02br 00In most cases, I think you would say 'I should be grateful if you could send me the picture'. However, it sounds rather formal.

0I believe saying "I 01b00should02b00 be grateful..." may be a British usage. Maybe someone will confirm that.02br

Dear all,

Is it possible to say: "I would be grateful if you sent me the picture" i.e. using the preterit "sent" rather than "could" which seems to me as adding heaviness to the sentence ?

Thank you
Ronnie

The way I see it is that "could" implies only having the ability to send the picture. That doesn't  mean it will be sent.
"Would" implies a request for the recipient actually to send the picture, not merely having the ability to send it.

Hi,
The way I see it is that "could" implies only having the ability to send the picture. That doesn't mean it will be sent.
Yet you wouldn't really have cause for gratitude if someone merely 'had the ability' to send the picture to you, would you?

'I would be grateful if you could . . . ' is a polite form of request, because it makes the request very indirectly.

i think that i sould be grateful is not a correct english .
even in british it's an err to write it.we cannot deny that it's common to see people make that mistake.
so Yankee you should use the second sentence.

Use "should" with "would", and likewise "shall" with "will".
