"Good" vs. "well".

In response to "How are you doing?" is it OK to say "Good"?

Since doing is a verb, I would think that well is the only right response, but I hear good all the time.

Top answer

" is it OK to say "Good"? 'Well' is preferred to 'good'. , I more often hear and say 'Fine'.

Very true Clive. "I'm doin' good" is mostly used by teens. "I'm doin' great " is another misuse of the adj. "Well" and "Fine" are good because they are both adverbs.

I posted this before but it didn't go through, so I'll try again, but the short version.

Good is an Adjective and Well is an Adverb. that's why it is incorrect(though commonly accepted among teens) to say "I feel good" or "I feel great".

This has been discussed before. "I feel good" is perfectly OK. The "well" in "I feel well" is not an adverb. Well is an adjective when it means healthy.

Thanks, Clive.

Is well only 'preferred' because good is often used, tho

Hi,

Is well only 'preferred' because good is often used, though grammatically incorrectly?

I was going to say it is incorrect but I didn't want to sound prescriptive. In this context, perhaps in 10 or 20 years 'good' will be considered quite OK. A lot of things we say in such minor, casual greetings tend to be just idiomatic.

I see. Thanks again.

Thank you Pter,

That was a most concise and helpful solution to a vexing grammatical conundrum that I (and millions of others) have wrestled with for years.

Thank you for showing that it is possible to be colloquially and grammatically correct at the same time.

The use of good and well as meaning "healthy," elegantly resolves a really widespread confusion.

Hi,

I aggree with what has been said. But note, however, that the original question was about 'I'm doing good', and not 'I'm feeling good'. Those are two different things.
