"for" or "to"?

Could you help me with a preposition? "The New World was already an old world to the Indians who were in residence." Can "to" be replaced by "for"? I don't know when to use "to", when to use "for". Thanks for your help.

Both prepositions work. 'To' perhaps suggests that the Indians were thinking consciously about their world, while 'for' tends to suggest that it is an unconscious aspect of the native attitude. But it is not a strong difference.
