"fishes"... grammatically incorrect?

If fish is the singular and plural form of the word, why do we need "fishes"? is "fishes" grammatically incorrect?

Also, since offspring is also the plural of offspring, does that mean "offsprings" is also grammatically incorrect?

'offspring' is both the singular and plural form.

Actually, fishes should never be used. One should rewrite the sentence to read "a variety of fish species were on display" or "on display were many species of fish"

The word 'fishes' is seldom used except in technical discussions about different species.

offsprings is not a valid word.
