"Fill in the best word" sentence, again

Ok, another sentence that is plainly too hard for me. Instruction are the same: supply one English word if needed. If not needed, put 0 (zero).

Darwin, in his memoirs, went to some ______ to denying that he had ever stumbled upon evidence that the subject of evolution was "in the air" in his day: I _____ well now and then sound not a _______naturalists, but i never came across a single one who seemed to harbour ______ misgivings about the constancy of species whatsoever.

Those underlined words are my guesses. In denying and constancy there are help in my own language. However, i do not know if they are in appropriate form. And that "across" is the only thing that came in to my mind. I am extremely grateful if someone could give me a hand with these.

Hi Zerox, Darwin, in his memoirs, went to some _trouble_____ to deny that he had ever stumbled upon evidence that the subject of evolution was "in the air" in his day: I _____ well now and then sound not a _______naturalists, but i never came across a single one who seemed to harbour _any_____ misgivings about the immutablility of species whatsoever. The sentence in italics does not make any sense. I think you must have typed it with errors.

Sorry to tell you but it is exactly like that; and I totally agree with you that it makes no sense, however, this is a university test so it isnt a mistake. And why it is "deny" insted of "denying" and, furthermore, could there be "extent" insted of "trouble"?

Darwin, in his memoirs, went to some lengths to denying that he had ever stumbled upon evidence that the subject of evolution was "in the air" in his day:

I may well now and then sound not a lot like other [yes, more than a word, I know] naturalists, but
