"except" and "unless"

There are those among mankind,who can enjoy no relish of their being,except the world is made acquainted with all that relates to them, and think every thing lost that passes unobserved.

1.can "except" be replaced by "unless" if not,why>?

2.could you please explain the sentence for me?
