Quotes necessary or not?

Hi,

In one of the letters, you called yourself a progressive thinker.

In one of the letters, you called yourself a 'progressive thinker.'

First, are quotes necessary? Second, if they are, should they only be around progressive thinker (leaving out the article 'a' before that)?
