Quotes in a Question that is a Reply with Repetition

"I know a dog when I see one," she said.
"A dog?! Who you callin' 'a dog'?" he replied.

Are those single quotation marks around the second "a dog" necessary, and, if so, should there also be quotes around the first one?

Thanks.

Snarf Are those single quotation marks around the second "a dog" necessary? I wouldn't say so, no. And if you did use quotation marks, they would go around just dog , not including the article.

The second dog gets no comma, as far as I'm concerned. But if the first hound were not modified by the article, I would use quotation marks, though I'm not sure why.

"I know a dog when I see one," she said.
"'Dog'? Who you callin' a dog?" he replied.

Oh, that's really interesting. I wasn't expecting you to say that. Well, what about this example, then

SnarfShould that first "how" get quotation marks, then, in accordance with what you are saying, since it doesn't have an article in front, or is this a different matter, because it's not a noun or adjective?
No, this is entirely different.
SnarfShould that first "how" get quotation marks, …
