Speech & Pronunciation

"east" and "yeast"

Hello. How do you pronounce the 'y'(as in "yeast")?
I've looked at several web sites, and they just say to start with the long i position
and make a transition to the next sound.

Could someone give me a more clear explanation or point me in the right direction?

Thank you

The 'y' sound is a palatal glide. The closest palatal in English is the 'zh' sound ('s' in vision), so you might start by saying "zheast", then gradually modify the position of your lips and tongue to produce 'yeast'. For 'zh' the lips are somewhat rounded.

  • Change this to the "smiling lips" position used for the sound 'ee'.
  • For 'zh' the tongue tends to bend upward.
