quote and brackets

Hi,

I seemed to hve seen some things like below in brackets. What do they represent? Why use brackets?

"[T]hat is not right .."
"He said that and [that] is not right"

The brackets indicate a word or phrase that is not in the original quote, but that has been added by the quoter to maintain the syntax or clarify meaning.
