"dissolve parliament"

I've always wondered what "dissolve" means in terms of "dissolving parliament". I know that in science, it means when solutes integrate into the solvent, but I'm guessing this has nothing to do with parliament Emotion: smile.

For example: On Wikipedia, "After winning the civil war, he dissolved the Spanish Parliament, establishing an authoritarian regime that lasted until 1978, when a new constitution was drafted." I've also read that King James dissolved the English parliament.

I have tried looking it up: "bring an end to" "destroy" etc... but what I'm wondering is whether or not "dissolve" means "to bring an end to forever or just temporarily"?
