"Common end"?

What does "common end" mean? I read somewhere and came across the part "work to a common end".

"The common aim of the volunteers was to clean up the effects of the flood" = They all want to clear up the mess.
"The common end of the voluntary work is cleaning the street."

common = the same for everybody
