"clause" means sentence?

'Time time reference can be established in a previous clause, and the verbs in the following clauses are therefore put in the past tense'
(Collins Cobuild English Grammar)

Does 'clause' equal to 'sentence'? Is it referring to a sentence when it says 'clause' in here?

Thank you.

Best wishes,

Clause is part of a sentence but it has subject - verb - object itself.

eg. I learnt that clause has some similarities with a sentence.

The underlined is a clause.

clause -> subject,

has -> verb,

some similarities with a sentence -> object.
