Vocabulary

"blister paint"/ "the paint to blister"

Hello. I am Japanese and new here. I came here to ask for your help.

I've been reading some fictional story where a head of Yakuza appears. He is described as someone who "stares to blister paint." Later in the story, he reveals something that is new to his nephew. There it is described as "the paint is starting to blister."

I have been trying to read these expressions correctly. But dictionaries are not much of help this time.Emotion: sad Could someone please paraphrase these words for me?

Thank you.

Hello, Kashmee, welcome to the English Forums! When paint blisters, it means that bubbles are forming on its surface. So "the paint is starting to blister" sounds OK to me.

  • Yet, when you say "he stares to blister paint", it sounds as if just with his looks he could make the paint blister.

Thank you for your reply, pianne.

I do know what you mean perfectly. About the quate, to be exact, it was:

(he is) with a stare that could blister paint.

Does not make much difference, does it? And yet, I'm not talking about Harry Potter.

But thank you very much, anyway

Emotion: smile

I guess it refers to a very hot and piercing glare...
