0Hello =)02br 02br 00I am an Open University student here in the UK, in my second year (of six), and studying the English language.02br 02br 00As part of one of my upcoming assignments, I need to research a single archaic or extinct English word, and the word I have chosen after some careful research is the word "betwixt" now known as "between" given its long history in the language and various attributed meanings.02br 02br 00Part of this assignment involves asking others what they immediately think of when they hear the word "betwixt," whether it is something -- or nothing. If you would like to share your views in a single short sentence, I would be appreciative.02br 02br 00All the best.02br 02br 00Harry Shires0-

0When I hear the word01i00 betwixt02i00, I immediately think of the idiomatic phrase, 01i00betwixt and between02i00. Since this is still a phrase in common use, I wouldn't consider your word quite dead yet.0-
0I think of the saying 'a rose betwixt two thorns' although most people say 'between'. I think my mum used to say it with betwixt, and it is a biblical quote that way.02br 02br 00I agree that it is rarely used these days (possibly with Marvin as an exception) and would count as archaic but not obsolete.02br 02br 00Have fun on your OU course, I did several
0 It would be rare to hear it used currently, but not altogether unlikely. I would expect to hear it when someone is being slightly sarcastic, or is affecting a pompous style in speaking or writing. Like Mr M, the expression "betwixt and between" springs to mind for me. I wouldn't be surprised to hear it in a classical play or piece of literature. 0-
