Speech & Pronunciation

"August"?

Can anyone tell me the correct pronunciation of the word AUGUST?
I mean the initial AU sound.
I'm an EFL teacher and my kids think they hear both A and U in the word spoken on our class CD.
I prefer to think it's an "O" sound, like in PAUL or in the AU in SANTA CLAUS:

Who's right? or, more probably, are there local and regional variants, like USA vs. Britain?

Thanks

Dylan

I have a standard American accent.

I say AWWgust much the way the AU is pronounced in PAUL.

Although you will hear more often: "AUgst" without the vowel in "gust"
